  13. Compuserve Information Service that took place May 20, 1994.  The
  14. featured guest was Donald Schmitt.

  21. ELIOT STEIN-HOST: Good Evening. Welcome to the nightly "Stein Online"
  22. TALK SHOW on CompuServe. Tonight we'll be joined by Donald Schmitt,
  23. co-author of "The Truth About the UFOCrash at Roswell" (M. Evans & Co.)

  25. Donald, thanks for joining us. Why has this particular UFO case more
  26. credibility than most of them?
  27.  
  28. DON: We consider the Roswell crash of 1947, the grandaddy of all UFO
  29. cases!  First, it happened at a time when there was little to influence
  30. public opinion on UFOs. There wasn't all the UFO movies in theaters...
  31. nothing that would influence the mass public.

  33. You could pull out major newspapers from jun-july 1947, and find page
  34. after page of flying saucer reports!  The concerns were from the public
  35. and the government of sightings of unusual aircraft.  By all the
  36. accounts and witnesses--we were dealing with SOMEBODY else's aircraft.
  37. Then we had the crash. The crash of an unknown object. Two specific
  38. sites. One 75 miles Northwest of Roswell, New Mexico the second site
  39. halfway between the first site and Roswell which necessitated a press
  40. release--JULY 8--that the U.S. military had recovered a flying disc.

  42. ELIOT STEIN-HOST: Who made this announcement?
  43.  
  44. DON: The press release was issued by the 509th atomic bomb wing under
  45. the command of Col. William Blanchard.
  46.  
  47. ELIOT STEIN-HOST: Where did this release go to?
  48.  
  49. DON: Over the wire service --it managed to get out well enough for the
  50. next number of hours that every major newspaper had headlines about this
  51. recovery--all over the world.

  53. ELIOT STEIN-HOST: What time was the announcement?

  55. DON: 12 NOON July 8 CST.

  57. ELIOT STEIN-HOST: We are interviewing Donald Schmitt, co-author of "The
  58. Truth About the UFO Crash at Roswell" (M. Evans & Co.)

  60. ELIOT STEIN-HOST: So here we have an official press release from the
  61. U.S. government that they have recovered a "flying disc" that goes out
  62. on the wire services. What happens then?
  63.  
  64. DON: By 7:30 p.m. that evening, the announcement was RETRACTED..by Brig.
  65. Gen. Roger Ramey.  Displaying a very conventional radar reflector in his
  66. office--he "explained" away the entire event.

  68. ELIOT STEIN-HOST: DId most people including the news media fall for this
  69. cover-up--after all, this was our government, who NEVER lied to us?
  70.  
  71. DON: Probably out of fear and because of the patriotic atmosphere of the
  72. nation at that time--the explanation was accepted without any second
  73. thought!  It would not be until 30 years later that the INTEL officer,
  74. Major Jessie Marcel, broke the story to the media, stating that he had
  75. actually handled pieces of the genuine flying saucer!  That was in
  76. 1977..and the only publication that would even touch the story was the
  77. National Enquirer.

  79. ELIOT STEIN-HOST: These days, Time and Newsweek would be there in a
  80. flash!

  82. DON: Marcel persisted. After that additional witnesses came forward.
  83. They talked about the material...the recovery of the material.
  84.  
  85. ELIOT STEIN-HOST: How big was the saucer that landed?
  86.  
  87. DON: It wasn't a saucer. The description of it was that it was without
  88. wings or a tail section. The term flying saucer was coined by a reporter
  89. from Oregon, who had been told about what a witness saw--nine flying
  90. objects.  It was like the heel of a shoe--15 feet in width--about 15-20
  91. feet in length. It had a center crew department.

  93. ELIOT STEIN-HOST: Were there any occupants in this crash landing?
  94.  
  95. DON: Six first hand witnesses not only described the shape of the
  96. craft... but independently described five bodies that were recovered!
  97.  
  98. ELIOT STEIN-HOST: What did the bodies look like according to the
  99. accounts?
  100.  
  101. DON: The descriptions are basically identical! Humanoid--short in
  102. stature, about 5 feet in height--
  103.  
  104. ELIOT STEIN-HOST: So far you're describing Danny DeVito
  105.  
  106. DON: Larger dis-proportionate heads--larger eyes...not your typical
  107. contemporary UFO occupant description--
  108.  
  109. ELIOT STEIN-HOST: So these are not the "greys" that we see on book
  110. covers and such...
  111.  
  112. DON: No...these were humanoids.  A silver-grey one piece jump suit they
  113. wore.  Bodies were placed in lead-lined body bags...what is relevant is
  114. that the 509 bomb wing was the first nuclear bomb strike force based at
  115. Roswell.  The bodies were then transported via two separate flights--
  116. early morning July 6 around 2:00 a.m.--one flight going to Andrews Army
  117. air field and the second to Wright Field.

  119. Interesting to note--that in July 1947--there were two adjoining air
  120. fields in dayton Ohio--Wright Field and Patterson--and witnesses to the
  121. events have described landings at Patterson. What is important is that
  122. the foreign technology headquarters--was based there.

  137. roswell farmer and family who picked up pieces off their farmland which
  138. included flowered wallpaper.  The farmer's horses were
  139. spooked by alian cries thru the night.  Where is the AZ D.J. who
  140. announced the crash and was cut off the air.  and finally...doesn't our
  141. AF have similar aircraft today?  ga...thanks

  143. DON: It was a ranch foreman--not a farmer--high desert country, the
  144. rancher died over 25 years.  His family is still alive. The now-grown
  145. children have verified everything except the conventional materials (the
  146. foreman retracted that)--as to the press efforts to put it over the
  147. wire, Judd Roberts at radio station KGFL described threats from the
  148. F.C.C. with loss of their license which were followed by phone calls
  149. from Senator Dennis Chavez warning them to do what they were told.  The
  150. transmission was shut down. In regards to the FBI intercept of the wire
  151. transmission, there wasn't anything that unusual about the wire
  152. transmission being cross-schecked before transmission.

  166. steps were taken then and now to defend against an invasion from space
  167. based upon what was learned from the crash.  thanks.   GA

  169. DON: Newspaper accounts prior to the incident describe fighters on
  170. standby throughout the country. Radar on 24-hour alert. Following the
  171. incident, after the balloon explanation, there was literally a news
  172. blackout.  Articles read how the military was taking measures to stop
  173. the rumors.

  175. Let me quote the first director of project Bluebook, captain Edward
  176. Ruppelt: "By the end of July 1947--the Pentagon was in a complete panic
  177. about UFO's." Obviously something had happened!

  179. ELIOT STEIN-HOST: Where was Harry Truman during all this?
  180.  
  181. DONALD: Truman had specifically on July 8--held security meetings with
  182. his cabinet and with his advisors. Some witnesses have suggested that
  183. Eisenhower went to New Mexico.

  185. ELIOT STEIN-HOST) Was Harry afraid he might have to say "The buck stops
  186. here" to a group of aliens?
  187.  
  188. DON: (grin) We have to remember that because of the Atomic bomb
  189. situation at Roswell, there were more Soviet spies in Roswell than
  190. anywhere else in the country.  There was a complete blackout of both the
  191. military and the press.

  199. believe that aliens have landed on this planet?

  201. DON: Based on over 500 witnesses, and having spent as much time
  202. investigating alternative explanations from the original "Balloon-radar
  203. device), "Japanese balloon bombs," "V-2 rockets," and so on... we as
  204. well as the skeptics have been unable to locate a single first-hand
  205. witness who has described a "CONVENTIONAL" device to explain what
  206. happened.  To the contrary--we have over two dozen living witnesses--to
  207. the material...

  211. DON: ...recovered--as well as SIX deathbed statements from witnesses
  212. acknowledging the alien bodies!!!

  222. DON: Yes, "The UFO Crash at Roswell"--from Avon paperback.  This is the
  223. follow-up.

  227. ELIOT STEIN-HOST: Please tell us about the material of the U.F.O.
  228. spacecraft... was it analyzed... has anybody come forth with the
  229. results?
  230.  
  231. DON: We have a firsthand description.  It is sections of paper-thin,
  232. metal like material that would sustain the blows of a 16-pound
  233. sledgehammer without a scratch.  Foil-like memory material that you
  234. could roll-up, fold and then unfold and it would have no
  235. sign of ever being folded.

  237. ELIOT STEIN-HOST: Any velcro?
  238.  
  239. DON: (grin) Strands of silk-like material that you could hold a light on
  240. one end and light would come out the other end. Fiber Optics? Maybe.
  241. I-beam sections with hieroglyphic-like symbology that ran the length of
  242. the strucures.  As to analysis--we have witnesses aside from the foreign
  243. technology division at Battell Institute, Rand Corporation, Hughes
  244. Aircraft, GE, I'm sure other labs throughout the country. And as of the
  245. mid-80's, one of our sources informed us that THEY STILL CAN'T CUT THE
  246. MATERIAL.

  260. DON: There are scientists within our organization that have been
  261. historically researching whether there were any drastic technological
  262. breakthroughs after the event!  As to the materials, it has been rumored
  263. that the Stealth technology was developed from it...but personally, I
  264. don't describe to such theories.  I still beleive that the cover-up is a
  265. cover-up of ignorance because they...
  266.  
  267. Predator: What about in weapons?

  269. DON: ...still can't figure out what made the thing fly!!!  If the
  270. materials aren't indigneous to the earth..how do you replicate them?

  272. Predator: good answer and I hope Stein will have you on again!

  274. ELIOT STEIN-HOST: Did they find any books, or communication devices? or
  275. ANYTHING that would provide clues to where these folks came from?

  277. DON: There was some symbology on the control panels. As to log-books,
  278. maps, anything of origin...nothing as to where they came from.

  285. Mike: Any speculation when the U.S Gov't will -if ever-come clean with
  286. the truth about the Roswell incident? GA

  288. DON: There is an effort in Washington headed by Congressman Schiff for a
  289. full disclosure. So far he has been stonewalled by the Department of
  290. defense, the Pentagon and the Air Force.  As evidenced by other recently
  291. exposed cover-ups, it will take efforts by regular citizens as well as
  292. the press to bring this out.

  294. ELIOT STEIN-HOST: Do they think there would be a panic if it came
  295. officially from them?
  296.  
  297. DON: In 1960, the Brookings Institute, was contracted by NASA as to the
  298. ramifications of contact with a higher intelligence.

  300. ELIOT STEIN-HOST: This study was clearly not about contact with the
  301. White House then?
  302.  
  303. DON: (grin) the 285 page report submitted to Congress included that such
  304. contact would be DISASTEROUS!  That each time a higher race made
  305. contact--it has eliminated the lower race!

  315. after so many years it shoud be declassified and available with freedom

  318. DONALD: In the late 1970's, we were forced to sue in Federal Court...The
  319. Air Force, FBI, CIA, as a result of the Freedom of Information Act
  320. request we made for Full Disclosure. Thousands of documents were
  321. released by court order and many of them were still "blacked
  322. out"-sanitized.  And these were routine cases. We can imagine how the
  323. files must look regarding Roswell!

  325. Cres: it only takes a very small bit of matl. to prove it's alien. GA

  327. DON: We're negotiating with military people for pieces of debris. Thanks

  330. crash site?

  336. DON: One of the...[garbled] They were very uncomfortable to the point of
  337. fright during the recovery... even the wife of one of the witnesses
  338. tells us that her husband doesn's sleep well to this day and sometimes
  339. goesout on the patio in the middle of the night--stares into the sky and
  340. relived the whole incident again.
